Low Fat Dog Food

Low fat dog food helps to keep your dog healthy and may help your dog if it has a sensitive stomach and can't handle fats. Find out what foods you should try. Compare dog foods, and do your homework on a dry dog food comparison test so your furry friends eat right.

People have been on the low fat food rage for a while, so it would naturally carry over into the canine world of eating.

But just because low fat foods are good for us people, low fat dog food might not be the best food for the four legged members of the family.

Let me explain. For us two legged species, saturated fats are a no no, because they can clog our arteries and cause heart attacks. But the same is not true for our dogs, because even though the canines can eat a high fat diet, they rarely suffer from coronary artery disease and stroke because they live a much shorter life than people.

Many of our dogs have had fat allergies. When our old dog Misse got diabetes, she could no longer handle large amounts of fat in her diet. For her, the only thing that worked was making her a homemade diet of brown rice, lamb (with all fat removed- meaning our hands smelled like sheep for days!), and mixed frozen vegetables.

Patches just has a sensitive stomach and can't eat the main food that our other dogs eat! He will get terrible diarrhoea, but once we switch him over to a low fat dog food, he feels better and his poops are much easier to pick up!

Daisy on the other hand, had a liver problem, that is common in dogs that are overweight (she isn't overweight, but has the same problem). If she steals cat food from the cats (which is much fattier), or has fatty dog food, she will continue to throw up. It can be a serious condition and she's been taken to the vet for this. Slowly she has to be brought onto a low fat diet.

These are several cases where a low-fat diet is good.

If there is fat in your dog good, make sure that the fat is from a quality meat ingredient, which is what the best quality dog food contains. We are not talking about restaurant grease, industrial waste or beef tallow, as those are fatty by-products and very unhealthy for any dog (or person for that matter).

Just like in people, good dietary fat is a good source of energy, and is the only way a canine can get the essential fatty acids they need for a healthy life. There are cases where a low fat dog food is necessary because your dog has pancreatitis or chronic obesity or fat intolerance. Be sure and take your own dry dog food comparison to find out the best quality dog food you can feed your canines.

Most dog food manufacturers add fat to their dog foods, but it is the manufacturers that add "animal fat" to cut costs, that is the problem. The good fat ingredients, as long as they are clean and fresh will contain a reasonable amount of wholesome nutrients and are:

  • Chicken fat
  • Flax seed oil
  • Sunflower oil
  • Fish oil

What you need to watch out for are the "animal fat" that manufacturers use to save on cost and is not used in the best quality dog food. Animal fat is defined by the dog food industry as "Animal fat is obtained from the tissues of mammals and or poultry in the commercial processing of rendering".

Protein Vs. Fat Amounts

You also want to make sure that your dog food has more protein than fat in it. This can be easily seen when you look at the nutritional info, and it willhave a weight of fat and weight of protein. Make sure the protein number is higher than the fat number.

WARNING - This Content May Not Be Suitable For Everyone (how bad fat is made)

Rendering is the process of cooking raw animal material to remove the fat and moisture. Here are some of the "raw ingredients" used in rendering:

  • Euthanized cats and dogs (some still in their bags)
  • Spoiled supermarket food (some still in the shrinkwrap)
  • Road kill
  • Slaughterhouse waste (hooves, heads, organs, beaks, feet)
  • Dead zoo animals
  • Restaurant grease
  • Bread and cereal rejects (cobs, stalks, mill sewwpings)

These raw materials are put in an auger for shredding, then are cooked at 280 degrees for one hour. The meat is melted away form the bones in a what they call a "soup". This soup produces a layer of yellow grease called tallow, that is skimmed off. The remaining cooked meat is put through a hammer mill press, which squeezes out the remaining moisture and pulverizes it into a gritty powder. It is then put through a sifter to get rid of any hair and large bone chips, leaving nothing but yellow grease, meat and bone meal.

This product is then sold to ranches, farms, feed lots and dog food manufacturers. So please look on the bag of ingredients of the dog food you are currently feeding your canines and look for the following rendering produced products:

  • Meat by-product meal
  • Poultry by-product meal
  • Animal fat
  • Fish Meal

Summary

These are products that are not legally fit for human consumption, but are legal for dog food manufacturers to use in their dog food. So why would we let our canines eat such garbage ? A low fat dog food diet can be good if your dog is overweight or has allergies or medical conditions that require less fat. Please compare dog foods and try and get the best quality dog food for the four legged members of the family.

Just be aware of the dog food manufacturers that use rendered products in their dog food ingredients, and we as dog owners and consumers need to not buy those unhealthy foods for our dogs. So be careful when you are considering a low fat dog food diet for the dog in the family to make sure it is the right nutrition your specific dog requires.
