You see the Vikings back in that age were buried with their greatest possessions, and the Buhunds were very valuable herding cattle and sheep and protecting their farms. They were also supposed to continue these duties in the afterlife.

Another Spitz looking dog breed is the Norweign Elkhound, who is like a hound in temperament and hunting ability, yet are great with children and protecting the family. Another of the Terriers is the Norwich Terrier, like most Terriers this breed is intelligent, friendly and cautious, yet are not as nervous and isolated as other Terrier breeds.

Last on the list of "N" dog breeds is the Novia Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. This lesser known gundog breed is great in the field because they are alert, steady and patient, traits that also make them great family dogs.

Let's start out with the large flaring ears and cute face that is the Papillon. Do not be fooled however by their small stature and good looks, as they are unafraid to flush out moths and mice. The "P" breed has to include the cute, yet bid dog in a small dog's body known as the Pekingese. They are forever on guard so you usually know who on the block owns one.

Continuing on, we have the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, not to be confused with the Cardigan Welsh Corgi wha has a longer tail. Look up dog happy and you will find the jolly Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Then there is the dog breed that is more like a Terrier in temperament but a Basset Hound in appearance known as a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen. This fine breed can be comical and mischievous.

Have you ever heard of a Pharaoh Hound ? They are one of the oldest dog breeds ever, having been depicted in 4,000 year old Egyptian artworks. These intelligent dogs enjoy families, but have been bread for thousands of years to go after vermin. If you are looking for a good hunting dog, then look no further than the Pointer. They are alert and very trainable making them good dogs on the hunt.

A great family pet who becomes very attached to their owners is the Polish Owczarek Nizinny. They are a happy, alert and obedient breed. One of the smallest dogs out there is the Pomeranian. They are very intelligent and spirited, so it takes an owner with a lot of energy to raise them. because of their size they are not good around small children, because when play starts to get rough they can become fearful, nervous and snappy.

If you need a shadow dog, then the Portuguese Water Dog fits the bill. They love to appease their masters and let you know thatthey are there. If you are looking for a clown dog, then try the Pug. They have a lot of personality, but can be headstrong and stubborn on occassion. Still they make for great companion dogs. Our last "P" dog breed is the Puli. First we have the ever lovable Saint Bernard. They are so sweet and gentle, love children and just a great family dog. Thinninh down a bit, we next have the Saluki. Some consider this the oldest breed in history as they were the royal dog of Egypt. This slender breed can attach itself to a single person, but can get along with the whole family.

This breed is not common to Americans, but is a good watchdog and devoted to their masters, alerting them if they sense something that is not normal.

The Scottish Deerhound is another dog breed that are not very familiar to those in the United States, yet this breed is brave and persistent, two good hunting traits. They cane be reserved towards people. Agian in the Terrier group we have the Scottish Terrier. This breed is also know as the Aberdeen Terrier, but most just call them Scotties. This breed is very lovable with great charm.

Anotehr Terrier that begins with the Letter "S" is the Sealyham Terrier, which like some terriers is strong willed and has a mind of it's own. Erly effective training is necessary so this breed will obey their master. A great dog that starts with "S" is the Shetland Sheepdog. These miniature Collie look alikes are great family pets becauee they are loya, affectionate and willing to please all family members.

Next we have the Akita look alike that is the Shiba-Inu. This beautiful looking breed ar every smart and alert, but can be independent and aloof with strangers. The long haired Shih Tzu are sturdy, energetic pets that fit in vey well with families. They can be lapdogs or bouncy companions.
